Love and Tolerance

Love and Tolerance

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.  He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.
In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.  Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” 1 John 4:7-11

Don’t ever confuse love for tolerance. We are called to love the sinner while still abhorring sin. God tells us in Romans 6:23 that the wages of sin is death. He also tells us in Romans 3:23 that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

God’s solution to this eternal separation from Him as a result of sin is love. He loves us so much that He offered up His own son as our propitiation, our substitute for His wrath. We could never pay the wage required to gain eternity with God, so Jesus paid it for us through His death on the cross, the perfect spotless lamb crucified for us. This is the free gift offered to us by God Himself – salvation through the shed blood of His son Jesus Christ. Although we should never condemn the sinner, we should love people enough to condemn the sin. How will people know the love of the Savior if they don’t realize that they are in need of a Savior? Tolerating sin isn’t loving at all, in fact, I believe it is one of the most unloving things a Christian can do.
